Have you ever opened your cupboard, looked at the stack of plates, and let out a sigh? You want to use the plate at the bottom, but first you have to lift away the heavy ones on top. This has long been a structural limitation born from the fact that dishes are "round."
"SOLID DISH," created by TENT in collaboration with Sato Kogei—a woodworking studio in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, famous for its shogi pieces—solves that problem on a physical level. This is not a plate. It is a "book" for the dining table, designed to be lined up upright like volumes on a shelf.

| A "Picture Frame" Carved from a Single Slab

SOLID DISH is, at its core, a square block of solid (natural) wood.
When we think of wooden plates, we usually picture something round and warm with a "crafty" feel. But this is different. The geometric precision of a 3D milling machine merges with the finishing touch of an artisan's hand, giving it a sharp, almost industrial silhouette.
A circular hollow is carved into the center of a square board. As a result, the food plated on it is showcased like a piece of art set within a "frame." You could call it a product that abandons the concept of "the plate" and redefines it as "the backdrop for the meal."

The fact that it is "square" is more than a stylistic quirk—it carries functional necessity.
- Vertical Storage: Because it is square, with a flat base and substantial thickness, you can store it "standing up," just like books on a bookshelf. Just as you'd pull out a book you want to read, you can access the plate you want to use in zero seconds.
- The Aesthetics of Negative Space: The four corners that surround the circular hollow create margins. Place cutlery there, or add a piece of bread, and a beautiful sense of order emerges within a single plate.
- The Art of Stacking: Of course, you can stack them too. The square shape reduces dead space on the table, letting you make the most of your dining surface.

The maker, Sato Kogei, is a professional woodworking studio that has been crafting wooden products in Tendo City for over 30 years.
Two materials are offered: walnut, also used for high-end furniture, and beech, with its bright, fine grain. Each piece is generously milled from a single solid board, so there are no joints, and the grain flows seamlessly across the surface.
The surface is finished with a urethane coating that complies with Japan's Food Sanitation Act, preserving the warmth of the wood while repelling oil and moisture for everyday practicality. It overturns the notion that "wooden plates are a hassle to maintain," delivering a smooth, easy-to-handle feel.

The true value of SOLID DISH actually emerges when it isn't being used.
Stand them on a kitchen shelf with their "spines" facing out, lined up in a row. The presence they create resembles a collection of imported books. You can also take advantage of their flat shape by using one on your desk as an "accessory tray" for keys or a watch.
It functions as a tool for meals, yet it also works as a piece of interior decor. This may be the first "show-off plate" you'll never need to hide away in a cupboard.

This product is especially recommended for people who feel stressed by "managing" their tableware.
- People short on storage space: Just "slip" them into a gap in your cupboard, and storage is done.
- People who care about food photography: The square frame effect makes everyday meals look professionally composed.
- Minimalists who love the texture of wood: Anyone who wants both the precision of a tool and the warmth of natural materials.
