Since the days of Tamagotchi, we've raised countless digital pets. Yet they always existed on the other side of cold glass — the LCD screen. We wanted to pet them, but our fingers only ever touched the display. This frustration was an insurmountable wall lying between the digital and the physical.
"Bitzee," released by Takara Tomy, has physically shattered that wall. Open the lid, and a glowing character is right there. Reach out with your finger, and you can genuinely feel that it's "there" — and the pet responds. This isn't a toy. It's the latest interface device that has made "a hologram you can touch with your hands" a reality.

Bitzee's mechanism looks like magic, but it's actually wonderfully analog and brute-force.
At the center of the device is a thin, board-like "ribbon" lined with LEDs. Switch it on, and this ribbon vibrates back and forth at speeds faster than the eye can follow. By blinking the LEDs in sync with this motion, the character is perceived by our eyes as an "afterimage of light floating in mid-air."
Because the ribbon itself is physically real, you can touch it with your finger. Stroke it, and the ribbon's movement changes — or its sensors pick up on you — and the character lets out a happy little cry. The illusion of "touching light" syncs perfectly with the real sensation of "touching something." That's what produces a sense of "presence" so vivid it short-circuits your brain.

Bitzee's housing design is optimized to make this unique gimmick work.
- A treasure-chest-like opening action: The very act of opening the lid becomes a "summoning ritual into the real world." The way the ribbon starts vibrating the moment you open it and the pet leaps out is beautifully staged.
- Simple controls: There isn't a single button. You interact only by tilting the device, shaking it, and "touching the ribbon directly (stroking, poking)." It strips away smartphone-style complexity and specializes in intuitive communication.
- Evolution and collection: There are 15 different pets in total. Care for them and they evolve from "Baby → Adult → Super." Evolved forms unlock mini-games and other features that keep things fresh.

Once you place a Bitzee on your desk, you'll find yourself wanting to crack open the lid and pet it at random moments.
It's a completely different feeling from swiping a smartphone screen. It's more like slipping your finger into a hamster cage — a touch of nervousness, followed by affection the moment you make contact. Just having physical feedback multiplies your emotional attachment to a digital being many times over.
Play with it in a dark room and the immersion deepens even further. The self-illuminating character really does look as if it's running around inside the room. It's no exaggeration to call this a tiny MR (Mixed Reality) device.

This product makes a great gift for kids, of course — but it really hits home for adults who were once obsessed with digital pets.
- Gadget-loving adults: People who get excited by the very gimmick of "expressing a hologram through afterimage effects."
- People who can't keep pets: Those who crave the kind of comfort that comes with physical contact.
- People interested in new UI/UX: Those who want to glimpse the possibilities of future interfaces.
